The Page and Nausico Connection

Here is my proposal and background history to connecting Page to the main story.

In my proposal, the Graveyard Tales will be directly linked to Fragment by the character Page (and all of her supporting characters and events). While Page in Fragment is a young sorcerer learning more about herself and her powers, the Graveyard Tales will jump ahead in time approximately 40-50 years in the future. The Page we know in the present (AKA the time the tales take place) will be a full fledged sorcerer / sorceress and will be a main component of Nausico's past history.

Here is the tale that connects Nausico and Page.

Brief History of Eastern Squall:

Long ago in the Early Ages, a group of nomads stumbled upon a section of the world that lay in secret behind the mountains on the edge of the sea. They would be the founders of the Eastern Squall. As they explored the protected area, they were suddenly confronted by the Raven Queen herself. The Raven Queen, Goddess of Death, Fate and Doom urged the humble nomads to leave this place as it was a holy ground. Hidden within the sanctuary was a gateway connecting to her realm where the souls of the dead pass before they enter the after-life.

The nomads begged to be allowed to stay, promising to tend to the land and protect the hidden gateway. The Raven Queen agreed on one condition: they must keep from practicing magic forever. The nomads built Eastern Squall with the Raven Queens approval and soon formed a tradition to keep from using magic. As time passed, many forgot about the secret gateway and the reason for the magical taboo. Unbeknownst to most of Eastern Squall's inhabitants, a small society of Avengers and Invokers protect the ancient secrets and guard the hidden gateway to this day.  They are known as the Guardians of the Raven Queen.

NEW CHARACTER: Nausica

Nausica's Early Childhood:

17 years ago from the present year, Aurora and Alkin from the village known as the Eastern Squall had a child named Nausica. Nausica was a beautiful and health girl, but the villagers looked down upon her small magical abilities she displayed within her first year.

The people of the Eastern Squall respect magic and believe that everything is in harmony with it. However, using magic or bending it to do something unnatural is considered taboo. Even basic rituals are frowned upon that some would consider barely magical at all. This lead Aurora and her baby to be somewhat detached from the community.

The Sorcerer Page:

Around this time, Page has become a powerful sorcerer. She uses her powers for her own selfish desires and needs, fueled by her past experiences (AKA the Tales of Fragment). She is well known for both her terrible wickedness and her monumental achievements, sometimes both are related.

Page has come to see the limits of her own powers and wishes to make a child of immense magical talent to train as her apprentice. Collaborating with her fellow wicked allies and their prowess with machinery and magics, she creates a machine that can split a soul into two parts. One part would contain all the magical talents of a person while the other would remain un-magical (and to her, insignificant).
Around this time, Page seeks to find a young, fresh soul with enough magical talent to be worthy of her training. The child she inevitably chooses is Nausica.

The Fate of Nausica:

Nausica's father, Alkin, was a trader who spent more weeks away from home than he did with his family. A tragic accident during the transfer of a shipment from Alkin's ship to the shore leads to Aurora's death. It was now up to Alkin to raise and support his new baby alone, and he was terrified.

One of the traders on the ship offered the scroll of “Raise Dead” ritual to bring his wife back to life. Alkin knew the community would shun and exile him for preforming the ritual, but on top of that he knew no one with enough magical power to preform it.

Another man noticed his child had an affinity for magic and gave Alkin a machine from a mysterious land to the west that could enhance the powers of a magic user. Using this machine, Nausica could possibly evoke enough power to trigger the ritual successfully... or so Alkin was told. (The machine is the one created by Page that can split souls.)

Alkin was desperate and took the device and the ritual. In secret, he prepared his wife and child to preform the ritual. The secret Guardians of the Raven Queen tried to stop the ritual, but it was too late. In a cosmic flash, disaster struck.

The machine successfully split Nausica's soul, creating Nausico, possessing unnaturally extreme magical capabilities while leaving Nausica with none. The “Raise Dead” ritual failed, creating a revenant. Aurora, now a revenant, flees the city in horror.

Nausico's Fate and Childhood:

Some of the Guardians chase Aurora, but she escapes into the mountains never to be heard from again. The children are taken from Alkin and he is shunned. In his pain, Alkin exiles himself to the lands of the west in an attempt to escape his horrible deeds. Nausica is taken in by the Guardians to be raised and trained as one of their own. Nausico is sent to be taken over the mountains to a family who can care for him away from the Eastern Squall.

Unfortunately, this is exactly what Page had planned. In mid-travel, Nausico is abducted by Page and taken to her lair. Page decides she cannot handle raising the child while tending to her own work, so she passes Nausico off to one of her old friends / allies. (Someone from Fragment that Page knows will care for Nausico, whether they agree with what Page is doing or not. This could be someone we haven't introduced yet.) During his childhood, Nausico learns all about Page's past through the tales that her friend / ally tells him. During his childhood, Nausico sometimes has dreams or memories about things Nausica is doing... because they are from the same soul, they aren't twins, but more than what twins could be.

After Nausico has grown, (around age 15-16) Page returns for Nausico. She brings him to her lair where she teaches him everything she knows. Nausico learns some conjury, many languages, facts about places around the world, and much more. Page is training him to be the ultimate sorcerer.

Nausico's Exile:

For the last 20 or so years, Page has been working on a most important artifact. She has collected a grimoire, a magical book from a powerful wizard she defeated... around 20 years ago. (This would be a few years before Nausica was born.)

This grimoire has all of the wizard's knowledge, spells, and some of his power contained within it (and perhaps some from past owners of the book). Page has been slowly adding her own knowledge and magic to the grimoire, being careful not to bind herself to the book. The wizard's grimoire will bind itself to the nearest magical being, forming a life-long pact as soon as it can.

Page is using her own magic to enhance the grimoire's powers, hoping that one day she can use the grimoire's powers along with her own to become even more powerful. While she is fearful of binding herself to the grimoire, (Page fears commitments... part of her past experiences? A trauma?), she waits because the grimoire's power stores will only mature with time.

An unsuspecting Nausico accidentally stumbles upon the grimoire... and binds himself to it. Page is furious when she discovers the grimoire has bound to Nausico, and nearly kills him for it. Instead, to give herself time to think of a new plan, Page uses her most powerful magics to seal Nausico's memories and exile him, forcing him to wander the land without anyone to care for him or any memories to lead him to those who do.

Current Events:

Nausico is wandering the land without any memories to guide him. Though he knows a lot about things and places and languages (sometimes he can only understand a language, not speak), Nausico is lost and confused. Not to mention his overall appearance is strange and leads to problems! The grimoire disappears when not in use, so Nausico doesn't carry it around all the time. The grimoire appears to Nausico when he calls it subconsciously in times of need, often revealing a spell that could help in his current predicament.

Page hasn't forgotten about Nauscio, but is working on other projects at the present time. Page sometimes checks up on Nauscio, which takes the form of the orb Nausico has dubbed “Yala.” It is unclear as to what spell Page is using, of it's complete use, but it is of her own creation. Her current whereabouts are unknown.

Alkin, Nausica and Nausico's father, is alive and well. He has gone mad with the idea of bringing his family back together. In order to accomplish his goal, he has gathered a group of knights, dubbed by the people that encounter them as the Men in Red. The knights all wear a solid yellow cape that hides their weapons, but this yellow cape is covered in dark stains of blood. These knights are ruthless and cruel. Most every encounter with them ends in bloodshed of some form. They make the knights from The Order in Fragment look easy-going.  There are rumors they are brainwashed...

Alkin's overall goal is to reunite Nausico, Nausica, and Revenant Aurora to bring their family back together... but he doesn't have a plan for anything beyond that. He is insane.

  3. I love the story. I must admit I did not think she would have turned evil, but I do like it. Very well thought out and it will be awesome to see elements of this come into effect during the DnD story. Great job Kyle!
